Sometimes in the firing, to 2300 degrees, while a piece shrinks-17%overall, stress can cause fissures to open, often on the bottom of a vessel. In ceramics we call these 's' cracks as that is the shape they often take, as if unwinding from the spiral form the clay takes as it was thrown in on the wheel.
These fissures are not really cracks and they do not compromise the integrity of the piece.
When a vessel comes out lovely, with a fissure anywhere that opened up in firing I choose to highlight this characteristic and personality. It's beautiful imperfection and wabi-sabi nature. So there is a gold line painted over the fissure on the bottom of the piece. Invisible unless you look for it.
True Kintsugi is a repair of a broken piece, this is only a highlight done in 'Kintsugi' style.
